How to play LinkedIn Tango

Tango is LinkedIn's daily balance puzzle: a small square grid (six-by-six on most days, four-by-four on some) you fill with suns and moons. Every row and column must end up perfectly balanced, and the = and × signs between certain squares dictate which neighbours match and which differ.

Tango rules

Fill every empty square with either a sun or a moon.
Each row must contain an equal number of suns and moons — three of each on a 6×6 board, two of each on a 4×4 — and so must each column.
No more than two of the same symbol may sit next to each other in a line: three in a row is illegal.
An = sign between two squares means they hold the same symbol.
A × sign between two squares means they hold different symbols.
Like Queens, there is one unique solution and it never requires guessing.

How to win at Tango — strategy

1Work the = and × signs first

The signs are the strongest constraints on the board. An = pair next to a given symbol often forces a chain of three or four squares immediately — always harvest these before anything else.

2Two-in-a-row forces the neighbours

Wherever two suns sit together, the squares on both ends of that pair must be moons (and vice versa). Scan every row and column for pairs after each move you make.

3Count to three

The moment a row or column contains its third sun, every remaining empty square in it is a moon. Late in the puzzle this finishes whole lines at a time — keep a running count as you place symbols.

4Watch the gap-of-one pattern

A sun, an empty square, then another sun means the middle square must be a moon — otherwise you'd create three in a row. This pattern hides in plain sight more than any other.

How often does LinkedIn Tango reset?

There's one new Tango puzzle per day for everyone, with a streak for playing daily. Once you've solved it, that's the board until the next day's drop.

What do the = and × symbols mean in Tango?

= means the two squares it joins must contain the same symbol; × means they must contain different symbols. They only ever apply to the two squares they sit between.

Does Tango ever require guessing?

No — every Tango board resolves through the balance rule, the no-three-in-a-row rule and the signs. If you're stuck, recount the rows and columns that are nearly full.
