The puzzle, explained

The purple group is all bowl games with their first letters swapped—SIESTA is the Fiesta Bowl, HOSE is the Rose Bowl, BEACH is the Peach Bowl, and GRANGE is the Orange Bowl. The trickiest part is that BEACH and WAVE are both tempting together since they're beach-related words, but WAVE actually belongs with the California soccer teams (it's the San Jose Earthquakes' former name, the Clash). Similarly, FLAG could've felt like it belongs with VITAL and KEY since those are synonyms for important, but FLAG is actually a referee tool. And COIN might've thrown you off too since it's used in football (for the coin toss), but it's specifically part of a ref's accessories along with the whistle and bean bag.
