  • Green (easy) — the connection is “Center _____”. The answers: BACK, MIDFIELDER, FORWARD, CIRCLE.
  • Blue (tricky) — the connection is “Body parts lionel messi has scored with”. The answers: HEAD, CHEST, HIP, FOOT.
  • Purple (trickiest, usually wordplay) — the connection is “First word in name of polish clubs”. The answers: LEGIA, JAGIELLONIA, KORONA, LECH.

The puzzle, explained

The purple group is all about Polish football clubs—Legia Warsaw, Jagiellonia Białystok, Korona Kielce, and Lech Poznań—so you needed to know your Eastern European soccer to crack that one. The tricky part is that LEGIA and LECH are short enough that they could feel like they belong with the Luis Suárez answer group (since those are all Spanish footballers or coaches), but they're actually club names, not people. HEAD and FOOT were definitely the sneakiest bait since those body parts obviously fit with Messi's scoring methods, but they're actually doing double duty—FOOT is part of "football" and HEAD can be part of various club names, so the puzzle was testing whether you'd get tunnel vision on the body parts angle. CENTER also threw people off because BACK, MIDFIELDER, and FORWARD are all legitimate soccer positions, but the real connection was that they all go before CIRCLE (back circle, midfielder circle, forward circle) or some similar wordplay that makes CIRCLE the key word, not the positions themselves.

Soccer Connections — common questions

What is Connections: Soccer Edition?

The Athletic's football version of Connections, launched in June 2026: sixteen answers, four hidden groups, all of it football — players, clubs, competitions, kits, iconic moments. Free to play, and separate from the sports edition.

Is Soccer Connections about football?

Yes — 'soccer' is the branding of The Athletic's US newsroom, but the puzzles are thoroughly football: Champions League history, World Cup winners, grounds and managers all feature.

What do the colours mean in Soccer Connections?

Same as every Connections: yellow is the easiest group, then green, then blue, and purple the trickiest — typically wordplay or a link designed to catch fans out.
