The puzzle, explained

The purple group is sneaky because it's all about the *first word* of national team names from past World Cups: Costa Rica, Trinidad and Tobago, El Salvador, and United Arab Emirates. The tricky part is that these words don't seem to have an obvious connection at first glance—you have to know your World Cup history and realize they're all country name prefixes. COSTA, RAPHINHA, and NEYMAR were probably your biggest bait since they're all associated with Brazil, making you want to group them together, but Raphinha and Neymar are actually Champions League top scorers while Costa is the first word of a team name. LEWANDOWSKI, RAPHINHA, NEYMAR, and MESSI all seemed like they could be grouped as famous South American or European stars, but three of them share that specific Champions League record instead.
