The puzzle, explained

CAPON was a tough one today because it's just not a word that comes up in everyday conversation—most people don't think about poultry terminology when they're guessing. The vowel placement was actually reasonable with A in the second spot and O in the fourth, but the real killer was that C-A-P combo at the start, which could fool you into guessing CAPER, CAPER, or CABAL if you weren't careful. If you didn't know this was a culinary/farming term, you basically had to stumble into it through process of elimination, which is never fun. On the bright side, once you locked in those first three letters, the word did become a bit easier to complete.
