The answer is GRILL.

The puzzle, explained

GRILL was a pretty tricky one today because it's got that doubled L at the end, which narrows down the possibilities significantly—most players probably weren't thinking of words ending in -LL right away. The vowel situation didn't help either, with only that single I stuck in the middle, so if you didn't land on it early you'd be wandering in the dark for a while. That said, GRILL is a common enough word that anyone who thought to test the double-L pattern probably knocked it out without too much drama. The real trap was probably spinning your wheels with words like GRILL's close cousins (GRILL, TRILL, FRILL) once you figured out the -ILL ending—one wrong guess and you'd burn through your attempts fast.
