The puzzle, explained

STRIP was a tricky one because it's got that awkward consonant cluster at the start—SR isn't a common pairing, so if you didn't hit those letters early, you were basically guessing blind. The vowel situation didn't help either, with only that single I sitting right in the middle, which meant you couldn't rely on vowel placement to narrow things down the way you usually can. On the flip side, once you had S_RI_ or similar, the word should've started jumping out pretty quickly since STRIP is pretty common. The real trap was probably all those people trying _RIP_ words like GRIPE or DRIPS, which sent them down the wrong path.
