  • Yellow (easiest) — the connection is “Words heard during a coin toss”. The answers: HEADS, TAILS, RECEIVE, DEFER.
  • Green (easy) — the connection is “Determined”. The answers: DRIVEN, DOGGED, TENACIOUS, INTENT.
  • Blue (tricky) — the connection is “_____ pass, in basketball”. The answers: BOUNCE, CHEST, OUTLET, POCKET.
  • Purple (trickiest, usually wordplay) — the connection is “Raiders in the hall of fame”. The answers: SHELL, GUY, BRANCH, CASPER.

The puzzle, explained

The purple group is all surnames of Raiders players in the Pro Football Hall of Fame: Shell (Art), Guy (Ray), Branch (Cliff), and Casper (Gail). The trickiest part is that these are common English words that could easily distract you—especially SHELL and BRANCH, which might make you think of the yellow coin toss group since you might hear "heads or tails" but not "shell or branch." GUY is the real bait here because it's such a basic word that fits naturally into the green "determined" group as a synonym (like "that guy is so driven"), but it's actually Ray Guy, the legendary Raiders punter. POCKET was probably the sneakiest misdirection since it works perfectly for the basketball group (pocket pass), but it could have also thrown you off the Raiders track since pockets relate to money and shells.

Sports Connections — common questions

How is Connections Sports Edition different from regular Connections?

Same rules — sort sixteen answers into four colour-coded groups — but every category is sports: players, teams, rules, kits, moments. It's made by The Athletic (the NYT's sports newsroom), it's free, and it lives on The Athletic's site rather than the NYT Games app.

What time does Sports Connections reset?

At midnight in your own local timezone, like Wordle — not at midnight Eastern like regular Connections. Wherever you are, the new puzzle arrives when your clock strikes twelve.

What do the colours mean in Sports Connections?

The same difficulty ladder as regular Connections: yellow is the easiest group, then green, then blue, and purple is the trickiest — often wordplay or a sneaky link between the leftover answers.
