The puzzle, explained

It's a classic wordplay trap because these words are legit English words on their own, so your brain doesn't immediately think "oh, this is a country with a letter removed." The trickiest bait here is probably SWEDE, since it's such a common vegetable that it feels like it should belong with the food group up top (PASTA, FISH, etc.), which totally makes sense for pre-game meals. FRANC and CUB could also feel like they're hinting at currency or baseball, so wordplay puzzles like this really mess with your pattern-recognition instincts!
