The puzzle, explained

The purple group is all about completing "LA _____" — LA FC, LA Liga, La Coruña, and LA Galaxy are all real sports entities with that prefix. The tricky part is that FC, Liga, and Galaxy could easily trick you into other categories: FC sounds like a club name (it IS one), Liga looks like it belongs with soccer terminology, and Galaxy could seem like a random word. But they're all specifically the words that follow "LA" in official team or league names. VAN DIJK was probably your biggest bait here — it's definitely a Premier League captain, but it's also got that two-word structure that might've made you second-guess whether it fit the wordplay pattern, when really it belongs firmly in the blue group with the other captains.
