The puzzle, explained

The purple group is all things that can follow the word "year"—contract year, rookie year, career year, rebuilding year—they're all common sports phrases you hear commentators use constantly. The trickiest part is that ROOKIE and CAREER could've easily tricked you into the yellow group since rookies wear braces and athletes have career-ending injuries, but they're really about the "year" connection. CONTRACT and REBUILDING were probably the giveaways that pushed you toward the wordplay angle since those don't fit the injury gear theme at all. And WALL, WOODEN, STERLING, and ELWAY all being famous Johns (John Wall the NBA player, John Wooden the coach, John Sterling the Yankees announcer, John Elway the quarterback) was the sneaky blue group that could've pulled CAREER if you were thinking about John Career or something!
