The puzzle, explained

The purple group is all about names that start with state capitals—AUSTIN (Texas), AUGUSTA (Georgia), MADISON (Wisconsin), and PIERRE (South Dakota)—which is a sneaky wordplay angle that doesn't announce itself like the others do. The main trap here was the Miami Hurricanes alumni group, since REGGIE WAYNE, ED REED, VINNY TESTAVERDE, and DEVIN HESTER all played for the Hurricanes, but REGGIE WAYNE could've easily fooled you into thinking he belonged with AUSTIN REAVES if you were just thinking "football players" without that Miami connection. The California venues should've been the gimme once you spotted PEBBLE BEACH and TORREY PINES as golf courses, which made INTUIT DOME and LEVI'S STADIUM click as the sports arenas in that state. If you got stuck, it probably meant mixing up REGGIE WAYNE with the football players or not immediately catching that these purple names all started with city names!
