The puzzle, explained

The purple group is "AMERICAN _____" — so you're looking for phrases that complete with "American": American League, American Pharaoh (the racehorse), American Ninja Warrior (the TV show), and American Football. The tricky part is that LEAGUE and FOOTBALL both feel like they belong with sports, which is exactly what makes them bait for overthinking! PHAROAH is the real curveball since it's a horse, not a sport, but American Pharoah won the Triple Crown so it easily tricks you into grouping it with the Hall of Famers or other sports figures. And NINJA WARRIOR as a phrase is so sports-adjacent (it's a competition show) that it's easy to miss that it's actually just a TV title completing the "American" pattern.
