The puzzle, explained

The real trap here was that BRONZE MEDAL seemed like it belonged with the "associated with No. 3" group (since bronze is third place), but it actually belongs in purple because it ends in the element bromine... wait, no—that's not right, it ends in bronze which is an element! HAT TRICK was probably the trickiest bait since three-related answers are naturally tempting, and TOMATO CAN almost feels like it could sneak into the element group since it *sounds* odd and obscure, but it's really just part of the easy "bad opponent" category. FIELD GOAL works for the No. 3 group because it's worth 3 points, which is why it was sitting there looking suspicious while the actual purple answers were hiding in plain sight.
