The puzzle, explained

The trick is that CLASSY and FANCY sound like they should be together—both mean elegant or upscale—so that's probably where most people got snagged. Similarly, SWANK is luxury slang that could've seemed like it belonged with BOUGIE and POSH, but it was actually misdirection since it's just a pure synonym for fancy without any wordplay angle. Once you spotted the letter-insertion pattern, the purple group fell into place, even if the taxonomy angle isn't exactly everyday knowledge.
