The puzzle, explained

The purple group's trick was that all four words precede "ALERT"—NERD ALERT, RED ALERT, SPOILER ALERT, and WEATHER ALERT—but they're disguised as standalone concepts that could fit other categories. SPOILER was the sneakiest bait because it naturally wanted to gravitate toward the THINGS THAT BLINK group (like a turn signal's spoiler light), but it actually belongs with the alert phrases. RED was equally tricky since it could've seemed like it belonged nowhere, making solvers second-guess whether they'd found the right wordplay category. Once you locked in those four as "___ ALERT," the rest fell into place, but that purple group required recognizing a hidden phrase pattern rather than a straightforward semantic connection.
